Understanding the Voice of God | Lana Vawser

How do you discern the voice of God?

A common question among Believers is,

“How do I know if God is speaking to me?”

“And you will seek for Me and find Me, when you search for

Me with all your heart.”— Jeremiah 29:13

If this is true, then we know two things…

  1. God does speak to us
  2. We can discern His voice when we seek Him with our whole heart

Sometimes we get so wrapped up in trying to “hear” His voice that we miss how He is communicating with us all the time, every day. Let’s come into agreement with His promise in Jeremiah 29:13, thinking of our quiet time with the Lord as a way of calibrating our spiritual ears to hear His voice.

How does the Lord speak to us? Through His Word, visions, and revelations from the Holy Spirit, prayer, and creation. And He can’t wait to share His heart with us.

We just have to learn how to access those powerful encounters He has waiting for us.

The key to hearing God’s voice is being expectant and looking for Him everywhere.”—Lana Vawser

We know this statement from Lana Vawser to be true because His Word says…

“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind.”—James 1:5-6

Be Intentional

Vawser reveals that we need to intentionally seek and linger in the presence of God.

Think about this…

  • How do you enter devotional time with the Lord?
  • Do you come to Him with a list of needs and wants?

If you are a parent, you know how wonderful it feels to have your child come to you and ask, “Daddy, what’s on your heart?”

No doubt you’d want to know your child’s needs and meet them. Your child depends on you for those provisions. But when there is a position of lingering—meaning the child is eager to simply be in the presence of the trusted parent—the relationship deepens and the doors are opened.

Both child and parent are able to share what is on their hearts in an intimate way.

The same can be said when we approach our heavenly Father with a humble heart.

“Therefore, humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.”—1 Peter 5:6-7

Through this humble approach, a beautiful thread of peace and love weaves the Father’s heart to His sons’ and daughters’. Asking the Lord to share His heart changes yours to delight in His ways.

We can position ourselves to soak in His presence, then the peace of Christ will rule in our hearts (see Colossians 3:15).

Ask the Lord to fine-tune and adjust your senses to understand what He wants to say to you. You’ll start to notice that you see His glory wherever you go.

Recognize Repetition

After being in tune with His presence, you might notice a repetition of messages, symbols, or words that keep popping up on the scene. Recognize these repetitive themes that the Lord places in front of you. Ask Him to help you understand the language of the Spirit. He uses the natural to communicate with us in the supernatural.

The Lord’s voice will always be grounded in the love of Jesus—that will never change. He is speaking to you and wants to reveal to you your identity, destiny, and His character.

Decree the Lord’s Truth

Lies of the enemy come against us, but it is the voice of God that decrees the truth and breaks the power of any darkness that comes over your life. You are washed in the blood of Jesus, and He took all of your offenses and declared you righteous. Jesus declares you are free, so you are free indeed (see John 8:36)!

The Lord’s Word says, “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me” (John 10:27).

Ask the Lord to release an impartation of knowledge and wisdom to hear His voice. The Lord has something great in store for you!

Go to Him today and ask, “God, what is on your heart today?” Expectantly wait for Him to reveal more of who He is.

  • “Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, ‘This is the way, walk in it,’ whenever you turn to the right hand or whenever you turn to the left.”—Isaiah 30:21
  • “Teach me Your way, O Lord, and lead me in a smooth path, because of my enemies.”—Psalm 27:11

Position yourself to hear the voice of God and access all He has for you in His Kingdom!!
