The Good Father

fatherhand“Anxiety in the heart of man causes depression, but a good word makes it glad.”

—Proverbs 12.25

Sometimes we just need a reminder that God TRULY is good. Some of us have grown up with excellent father figures who have consistently shown us love, affection, and encouragement. On the other hand, there are those of us who have had less than perfect fathers—possibly they were angry, abusive, or maybe they were not in the picture at all.

For those of you who struggle with trusting Father God because of past issues with your earthly father, we understand completely. It can be difficult to separate the emotions from the past for the reality of a good God who deeply cares for EVERY aspect of our lives.

When fear, doubt, or unbelief about God’s love towards us begins to trickle in, we must take every thought captive and evaluate what the scripture actually says about His character.

He desires for us to lead a successful life…

The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.”—John 10.10

He is always with us…

“‘Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.’” —Joshua 1.9

He keeps His word…

“Not a word failed of any good thing which the Lord had spoken to the house of Israel. All came to pass.” —Joshua 21.45

He is merciful…

“Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the Lord Forever.” —Psalm 23.6

He is trustworthy…

“I would have lost heart, unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.” —Psalm 27.13

He strengthens us in our weakness…

“Wait on the Lord; be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart; Wait, I say, on the Lord!” —Psalm 27.14

He prepares good things for us…

“Oh, how great is Your goodness, which You have laid up for those who fear You, which You have prepared for those who trust in You in the presence of the sons of men!” —Psalm 31.19

goodlifeHe fills the Earth with His goodness…

“He loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of the goodness of the Lord.” —Psalm 33.5

He provides delicious nourishment…

“Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the man who trusts in Him!” —Psalm 34.8

He rewards those who look to Him…

“The young lions lack and suffer hunger; but those who seek the Lord shall not lack any good thing.” —Psalm 34.10

He directs us on safe paths…

“The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, and He delights in his way.” —Psalm 37.23

He forgives our mistakes with abundant mercy…

“For You, Lord, are good, and ready to forgive, and abundant in mercy to all those who call upon You.” —Psalm 86.5

He renews our youth…

“Who satisfies your mouth with good things, so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.” —Psalm 103.5

He corrects us so that we might prosper…

“It is good for me that I have been afflicted, that I may learn Your statutes.” —Psalm 119.71

I wish to encourage you to continue to strengthen yourself in the Word of God. Pick out key scriptures that remind you of God’s good plan for your life. When people, or the enemy, whisper negative thoughts to you about your future… begin praising God! Why? Because we know that whatever the enemy says is the counterfeit to what God is TRULY planning for us. When he speaks lies, you can praise God because the opposite is actually ours if we choose to take hold of the promises that our Heavenly Father has made to us.
