“Terror Tunnels” Still a Very Real Concern in Israel
Palestinian militants have been digging tunnels through Gaza and into Israel for many years. While many of these tunnels have already been discovered and thwarted, there are still some tunnel discoveries happening today.
One recent discovery happened in southern Israel, where Israeli soldiers were stunned to find a Hamas tunnel stretching from Gaza toward a kibbutz in Israel. The tunnel was especially elaborate, with concrete floors, walls and ceilings. It was even fully wired for electricity and communication purposes, and was wide and tall enough for a person to run through with weapons or ride through on a motorcycle.
Israel defense investigators analyzed the tunnel and deemed it to be completely structurally safe for use, meaning the tunnel was somehow dug, poured with concrete and wired without the knowledge of the defense forces. It’s just one more example of how the region is moments away from danger at any time, and how there is still a lot of work to be done in promoting peace throughout the Middle East.
