Preparation Is Key to Fulfilling Our Purpose
Throughout the Bible, we see how God guides His people through seasons of refinement and preparation. These hidden seasons are filled with unknowns, discomfort, and opportunity to surrender and trust Yeshua as our Shepherd.
We can’t see the full picture and have to trust the Holy Spirit one step at a time. But each moment of refinement is preparing us for a glorious future, beyond what we can imagine!
Understanding Hidden Preparation
The hidden preparation we go through is filled with God’s intentional care and is specifically tailored to our calling. Psalm 33:15 says that God fashions our hearts “individually.” He makes us unique and sets us apart for a Kingdom purpose far beyond what we can see.
Though it’s difficult to imagine this side of Heaven, if we choose Jesus’ way and follow Him, we will one day see the fullness of what He has been preparing for us.
As Paul writes to the Corinthians:
- “For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known.” —1 Corinthians 13:12
Just like in our personal lives, all the heroes of faith underwent their seasons of preparation and refinement. Let’s look at the inspiring stories of Hadassah (Queen Esther) and King David, and how they trusted God even when they didn’t understand His plan.
Hadassah—Orphan to Queen
Hadassah (later given the Persian name Esther) was born to Jewish parents in the Persian Kingdom during Israel’s exile. In a foreign land, she soon lost her parents and was raised by her cousin Mordecai. Hadassah’s story begins with loss and displacement. But these tragedies were setting her in position for a royal calling that would preserve the Jewish people from attempted annihilation.
God was putting her in the right place at the right time to answer her call.
- “…Yet who knows whether you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this?” —Esther 4:14
He was working behind the scenes…
- Preparing the way for the Persian queen Vashti to be removed so that Hadassah could take her place as Queen Esther.
- Leading Hadassah to the palace with the other beautiful women so she could be chosen as queen.
- Allowing her a year’s time to prepare spiritually, emotionally, and physically for the coming season.
- Giving her great favor with those she encountered.
God prepared Hadassah’s character through her upbringing. She grew to love and trust Mordecai, who also had a position in the king’s court. She heeded Mordecai’s advice to hide her identity–to be revealed at the appointed time- and fasted and prayed when Mordecai warned her of the coming danger.
God even prepared the heart of the Persian king to love Esther, to choose her above the many other women he could have selected as queen, and to grant her favor when she approached him uninvited.
God gave Esther courage to speak at the risk of her life, wisdom in the timing of revealing the plot against her people, and authority to write decrees that spoke life and empowerment over Israel, even while in their exile.
Ultimately, Esther’s preparation saved countless lives and preserved the bloodline of the coming Messiah, Yeshua.
David—Shepherd to King
David’s story, similar to Esther’s, is one of humble origins, rising in God’s timing to a place of leadership and royal responsibility.
David was the eighth son of Jesse and great-grandson of Boaz and Ruth (see 1 Samuel 16 and Ruth 4:13-22).
David was overlooked by his father and bullied by his brothers. He spent much time alone in the fields, tending his sheep and singing to God. He had time to ponder, grow close to God in the wild, and fight lions and bears to defend his flock. He learned skills with a sling and grew in courage and ability to protect those in his care from enemies.
In David’s most hidden and unassuming moments, he was being prepared to lead, fight for, and protect the children of Israel.
All of these things—and more—were preparation for the stages of David’s purpose and call…
- From Samuel—led by God—anointing David to be the next king rather than one of his older brothers…
- To David, trusting God as he took on the giant Goliath…
- To David’s patience in his years of trials…
- To David, ultimately entering his place as king.
Certainly, there was intentional preparation on David’s part—with God leading—both before and during these stops on his journey…
- With preparing for godly honor necessary for a godly king, by choosing to honor King Saul, even when Saul did not honor him.
- Having to choose patience, walk in self-control, align, and prepare for God’s purpose.
We see that much of the preparation God allowed David to experience took place during his time in the wilderness. It’s here that David died to fear of man and increased in reverent fear of the God of Israel. It was away from cities or people, in the quiet, that David became a man after God’s own heart (1 Samuel 13:14).

We Do the Little Thing, God Does the Big Thing
As we see in the examples of David and Hadassah, preparation is key to fulfilling the purpose for which we were created. It’s a partnership between the Father and us, our willingness to trust, step out in obedience, and watch Him do the rest – to make a way where there seems to be no way. To part the sea, slay the giant, feed the multitude. Our God is the God of the impossible. He transforms us in the hidden moments for a purpose that impacts not only our own lives, but generations to come.
Preparation Is Key
As you navigate your own season of refinement, remember that no moment is wasted in the hands of the Father. Whether you are in a hidden field like David or facing a daunting transition like Hadassah, God is working behind the scenes to fashion your heart for your Kingdom calling.
Embrace this time of preparation with hope and expectancy, trusting that He who began a good work in you will carry it to completion, faithfully preparing you for a purpose far greater than you can imagine.
“…being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ…” –Philippians 1:6
