What Is Immersion and what makes it a Powerful Experience?
Curt Landry Ministries occasionally offers opportunities for people to partake in immersion ceremonies. But what is immersion, and what exactly makes it such a powerful experience?
Immersion is often performed in ceremonies for cleansing, repentance, and conversion to Judaism and Christianity, but it is an act with meaning extending far beyond conversion. By fully immersing oneself in water, a person can truly symbolize a total commitment to God and to his or her faith. This is one of the reasons it’s used in conversion ceremonies — it symbolizes a drastic, all-encompassing change of heart and commitment to a lifestyle.
During immersion, the person is fully submerged in a pool of water. The person being submerged momentarily floats and experiences a weightlessness that symbolizes a detachment from his or her own ego, individuality and sin. It represents a metamorphosis or transformation, the idea being that the person emerging from the pool is completely different than the one who went in. It is also a custom for men and women to be immersed in the mikvah (the pool) at certain high holidays. On the day before Yom Kippur, for example, it is common for people to undergo immersion. It allows the participant to become “ritually pure” in preparation for what is, for the Jewish people, the holiest day of the year. It symbolizes the participant’s intent to become a new person, just as a person converting to Judaism would. The same is true for immersion in anticipation of Tish B’Av — it is a way to purify oneself before the somber holiday begins. It is a cleansing of one’s soul and being, rather than the flesh.
