Tallit | For the One New Man

We know that a Jewish man will often wear a tallit, but did you know that all who believe in God can benefit from and wear them?! Man, woman. Jew, Gentile. God has made us ONE NEW MAN in our faith!

Join us below as we discover the importance of the tallit and how Believers benefit from them as well…

Tallit:

The tallit is a form of covering that has been around since Old Testament times. The Lord God, in Numbers 15:37-41, told Moses that the children of Israel were to wear them so that they would remember His commandments and be holy for Him. And many in the Old and New Testaments wore them; even Yeshua our Messiah!

Today, through the sacrifice of Yeshua, wearing the tallit is not a requirement. However, it is one of the spiritual tools God has given us—like the shofar, anointing oil, etc.—and therefore it has a time and place for use… even for Believers!

But WHY is the tallit important? Why should we, as Believers, consider using it as a tool in our spiritual arsenal?

In Numbers 15:37-41, when the Lord commanded the children of Israel to add tassels to their garments—wear the tallit—He said that it was for two main reasons. One, so that when they would see them, they would remember the Lord’s commandments. And two, so that by remembering the commandments, they might be holy for Him.

Beyond this though, there are other reasons why the tallit is important, and why we can benefit from it…

A tallit, when draped over our heads, is like a tent. A tabernacle where we can intimately commune with God without distractions.

In fact, many believe that Numbers 24:5 actually speaks of the tallit worn by the children of Israel and not physical tents where they would dwell.

“How beautiful are your tents, Jacob,

your dwelling places, Israel!”

—Numbers 24:5

Being found under a tallit is as a secret place of intimacy that honors God and brings Him to our remembrance so that we can commune with Him. It is beautiful, and this is one of the reasons that the ‘seer,’ who spoke about the tents of Jacob, was directed by God to speak blessings over the children of Israel—instead of curses, like those who attempted to sway his words with wealth desired.

Still, the tallit serves other roles even beyond these…

  • It can be a sign of a spiritual covering
  • It can be used for the passing of a spiritual mantle
  • It can be wrapped around a baby or child when they are dedicated to God
  • It can be a sign of agreement with the Lord. It can represent spiritual authority—such as with Jesus, when those who touched “the hem of His garment,” His tallit, were healed due to the spiritual authority (see Matthew 9, 14, and Mark 6)

A tallit can also be used in many other biblical ways such as…

  • When we are alone
  • When in a crowd of people
  • To show our desire to surrender to God and commune with Him
  • To set ourselves apart so that we can come into agreement with the Lord and the authority He has given us

Yet, no matter the reason behind the use of the tallit. It is God who is always remembered. It is He who is always put first. And it is God who is honored.

When we are under the covering of our God—when we are under a tallit—those around cannot tell who is under it; if it is a man or a woman, a Jew or a Gentile. Because, in faith, there is no division between man and woman, Jew and Gentile… but instead, we are One CreationONE NEW MAN. United through a common belief and love of God.
