Gallup Poll Shows Majority of Americans Continue to Have Favorable View of Israel
Despite some tensions between the leaders of Israel and the United States, a recent Gallup poll shows that the average American continues to view Israel as favorably as ever before. The poll indicates that 70 percent of Americans view Israel in a favorable light, with 62 percent saying that they sympathize more with Israel than with Palestinians in the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East.
Compare those numbers to the way that Americans view the Palestinian Authority. Of the respondents in the poll, only 17 percent view the Palestinian Authority favorably, and only 16 percent sympathize more with the Palestinians than with Israel. The remaining 12 percent of respondents say that they sympathize equally with both sides of the conflict.
All of these numbers are basically unchanged from numbers in a similar poll at the same time last year. There had been some thought that perhaps the public image of Israel had taken a toll in the United States given friction between United States President Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, but Americans continue to be in Israel’s corner, just as they have been pretty consistently over the past 10 years.
The favorability of the Palestinian Authority has also remained consistent since 2000, with the percentage of people viewing it favorably averaging approximately
17 percent over the course of that time period.
Additionally, the favorability of Israel has been a trend in both political parties in the United States. Since 2000, the way that both Republicans and Democrats view Israel has generally been on an upward trend of favorability.
The poll was conducted via telephone interviews in mid-February with a sample size of 837 random adults throughout all 50 states. The margin of error for the poll is plus or minus four percent, with a 95 percent confidence level.
