Discretion… An Ornament of Grace

Discretion is the quality of behaving or speaking in such a way as to avoid causing offense or revealing private information. Does this describe you? Do you honor others’ privacy while observing the world around you, and focus on sound judgment based on God’s Word? Then you possess the wise and powerful gift of discretion! What you do and say speaks volumes to others, and the Lord will bless this Godly Strength of discretion!

What does God say about discretion?…

• “My son, let them not depart from your eyes —keep sound wisdom and discretion; so they will be life to your soul and grace to your neck. Then you will walk safely in your way, and your foot will not stumble. When you lie down, you will not be afraid…”─Proverbs 3:21-24
• “…be sober, reverent, temperate, sound in faith, in love, in patience… be reverent in behavior, not slanderers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things… be..” –Titus 2:2-5

With your gift of discretion, you are able to discern what words or action could produce conflict. God instructs us to be discreet in our words and actions, and gives us clear things to avoid: slander and gossip. This magnificent gift gives guidance to your younger brothers and sisters on how to handle difficult situations and how to conduct themselves as Believers. What a glorious gift of wisdom and teaching!

Discretion is not…

Because of this gift, you may find people trust you and share their struggles with you. This is an honor, however, be wise in honoring them, as well. It may be tempting to spread gossip or slander because of what has been shared with you. Be on guard to choose your words wisely, and avoid questionable activities, as these are ploys from the enemy attempting to steal away the joy in the gift of discretion God has bestowed upon you.

Be encouraged…

With discretion comes wisdom and discernment. These character attributes work together to bring you an ornament of grace that others will take note of. May you always point them to God so He receives the glory! This noble character God has given you will show others that you receive your strength and wisdom in your daily walk from Him. May you give praise to Him for the strength He gives you in being discreet.
