Biblical Virtue… A Precious Possession

Virtue

Virtue is a beautiful fruit of the Holy Spirit. It means a lot of different things to different people. Most people would say that a virtuous character leads to solid moral values and behavior. Does this Godly Strength describe you? As Believers, we are called to lead virtuous lives. We can only possess virtue because God Himself holds all the character of virtue… and He has gifted it to us!

What does God say about virtue?… A lot!

It is difficult to encapsulate all that God has to say about virtue, because, by His very nature everything He does is good, right and virtuous. Paul gives us a glimpse of what the character of virtue looks like in his letter to the Philippians…

  • “Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.”—Philippians 4:8

  • “But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge…For if these things are yours…you will be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.”—2 Peter 1:8

God doesn’t want us to just DO things with virtue… He wants us to meditate and think about these things. Knowing He holds all virtue, He wants us to allow Him to penetrate our hearts and minds with this significant character, glorify Him and point others to His grace.

God graciously provides salvation through belief in Yeshua’s work. However, He doesn’t leave us there. He wants us to mature and grow in our faith. By doing that He instructs us to persevere and add moral character to our faith, from this we will be blessed with grace and peace in the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord!

Virtue is not…

Be on guard because the enemy will try to steal your promised possession of virtue. Because God has given us His divine power to live a virtuous life, we can…

“…escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.”—2 Peter 1:4

Satan will want you to question this, tempting you to turn your eyes away from the fruit of virtue and focusing on fleshly desires; be it recognition, self-righteousness, or entitlement, thus stealing the joy of knowing God. Pray for protection over this fruit and give thanks to God for this precious character.

Be encouraged…

Peter reminds us that if we walk in virtue we will be fruitful and our seed will multiply! Others will know the power of Christ because of your kindness, goodness, diligence and love. There is a powerful promise in the gift of virtue! May your gift be a protection for you and allow you to know God more.
