If Anyone Lacks Wisdom, Ask God | How to Receive God’s Wisdom
James 1:5 says, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.”
There are seasons in every Believer’s life when the next step isn’t obvious. Decisions become more difficult, emotions grow louder, and circumstances seem uncertain.
God’s answer isn’t confusion; it’s wisdom.
Throughout your walk with the Lord, one of your constant prayers should be to ask for godly wisdom. Receiving that wisdom isn’t always comfortable and often challenges old mindsets, asking you to leave behind familiar ways of thinking in exchange for His truth.
Walking in new levels of revelation isn’t always easy, but it’s worth it and always produces lasting fruit.
What Is Godly Wisdom?
Many people confuse wisdom with intelligence, education, or life experience. While those things have value, biblical wisdom is something altogether different. Godly wisdom is the ability to see situations from Heaven’s perspective and respond according to God’s truth rather than human reasoning.
A person may possess great knowledge yet lack wisdom, while another with little formal education may consistently make wise decisions because they walk closely with the Lord.
Wisdom is less about knowing more information and more about living in agreement with God’s Word.
God’s Wisdom Is Available to Everyone
James doesn’t tell us to search endlessly for wisdom. He simply tells us to ask.
God doesn’t withhold wisdom from His children or make us earn it. He promises to give it generously to those who seek Him with sincere hearts.
The challenge isn’t God’s willingness to give wisdom. The challenge is whether we’re willing to receive and obey it.
Wisdom Requires Godly Counsel
Scripture repeatedly connects wisdom with righteous counsel.
“Counsel is mine, and sound wisdom; I am understanding, I have strength.” —Proverbs 8:14
Throughout Israel’s history, many leaders experienced devastating consequences because they listened to ungodly voices rather than the Lord. This mixture of the holy and the profane eventually led them beyond the boundaries God had established.
The same principle applies today.
We must intentionally surround ourselves with spiritual fathers, mothers, mentors, and trusted leaders who point us toward God’s Word rather than the opinions of culture.
Renew Your Mind Daily
One of the greatest battles every Believer faces is the battle of the mind.
Our emotions, fears, and natural reasoning often compete with the wisdom of God.
- “I, wisdom, dwell with prudence, and find out knowledge and discretion.” —Proverbs 8:12
- “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.” —Proverbs 3:5-6
This is why Scripture teaches us to continually renew our minds with God’s Word.
When our thoughts are shaped by truth rather than feelings, we’re far less likely to make decisions based solely on temporary emotions or difficult circumstances.
Godly wisdom produces discernment that remains steady, even during life’s greatest storms.
Why We Often Resist Wisdom
Receiving wisdom from God is often easier than following it. His wisdom frequently challenges our pride, exposes unhealthy patterns, and asks us to trust Him beyond what we can naturally understand.
We want immediate answers, but God is usually more interested in developing our character than simply solving our problems. Every act of obedience strengthens our faith and prepares us for greater responsibility in His Kingdom.
God’s Wisdom Produces Fruit
Biblical wisdom isn’t merely intellectual knowledge. It transforms every area of life.
Scripture tells us that wisdom produces strength, understanding, righteousness, and lasting fruit.
- “Riches and honor are with me, enduring riches and righteousness.” —Proverbs 8:18
- “The crown of the wise is their riches, but the foolishness of fools is folly.” —Proverbs 14:24
While Scripture never teaches us to pursue wealth for its own sake, it does reveal that faithful stewardship, righteous living, and applying God’s wisdom often produce blessing and increase.
As we faithfully steward the gifts, opportunities, and resources God has entrusted to us, we position ourselves to experience His provision for His purposes.
The Fear of the Lord Is the Beginning of Wisdom
True wisdom begins with reverence for God. When we fully grasp what Jesus accomplished through His death and resurrection, our lives are transformed by gratitude and holy fear.
- “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” –Proverbs 9:10
Through His sacrifice, He broke the curse of sin and restored our relationship with the Father.
Following Him will still require sacrifice, perseverance, and obedience. There will be seasons that stretch our faith beyond what feels comfortable. Yet God supplies supernatural strength for every assignment He gives.

How to Grow in God’s Wisdom
If you’re asking the Lord for wisdom today, begin with these practical steps:
- Ask God boldly, trusting His promise in James 1:5.
- Spend time daily renewing your mind through Scripture.
- Seek wise counsel from spiritually mature Believers.
- Ask the Lord for ears to hear and eyes to see what He is revealing.
- Choose obedience, even when His wisdom challenges your natural understanding.
Sometimes asking for wisdom means slowing down before making a major decision. It may mean waiting before responding in anger, seeking counsel before changing direction, or spending more time in prayer than in planning. God’s wisdom is rarely rushed. As we learn to pause and invite the Holy Spirit into every decision, we discover that His peace often accompanies His direction.
As you continue walking with Him, wisdom will mature into greater understanding, discernment, strength, authority, and lasting fruit.
Prayer
Father, Your Word promises that if we lack wisdom, we can ask You, and You will give generously without reproach. Give us ears to hear, eyes to see, and the faith to follow wherever You lead. In Yeshua’s name, amen.
