Loyalty… A Lovely Commitment

In the Bible, loyalty is used to describe commitments in relationships. In Hebrew, the word, hesed is often translated to loyal love. It is used to describe a deep faithfulness and commitment to another out of love. If you possess the Godly Strength of loyalty give the LORD praise! For He will use this great gift to show others His devotional love!

If this Godly characteristic has been bestowed upon you, you have embraced the relationship you have with the one true God. You are devoted and loyal to the LORD, and as a result you are able to show loyalty to others.

What does God say about loyalty?…

God established the very meaning of loyalty through His commitment to His people. Because God is faithful and loyal, He has given us this strong character also. He wants us to use it for good, to show others our deep commitments born out of love.

  • “Therefore know that the Lord your God, He is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and mercy for a thousand generations with those who love Him and keep His commandments…”—Deuteronomy 7:9
  • “But Ruth said: ‘Entreat me not to leave you, Or to turn back from following after you; for wherever you go, I will go; and wherever you lodge, I will lodge; your people shall be my people, and your God, my God. Where you die, I will die, and there will I be buried. The Lord do so to me, and more also, if anything but death parts you and me.’”—Ruth 1:16-17

Ruth provides a powerful example of loyalty. As Believers, our loyalty and allegiance is to Christ, and therefore we can be loyal and faithful to others as God intended.

Loyalty is not…

As with any Godly Strength, the enemy will attempt to counterfeit it, twisting it into something other than the truth in an attempt to steal your joy. Be aware…

“Watch, stand fast in the faith, be brave, be strong.  Let all that you do be done with love.”—1 Corinthians 16:13-14

Loyalty can open the door to feeling betrayed if something in the relationship does not go as you thought. God gives us instruction on how to deal with this in a loving loyal way with our brothers and sisters…

“Moreover if your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he hears you, you have gained your brother.”—Matthew 18:15
