How Can God Use Me?

talkingwithgod

There are many examples in the Bible where God chooses unlikely candidates to fulfill His purposes. Quite possibly the reason that the Bible has been the number one best seller for hundreds of years, is because the Bible is full of stories about men, women—and may we remind you, children—who although they seem less than extraordinary, God uses them to do mighty exploits.

So often we question God’s choices. Maybe we question why God didn’t chose to give us certain abilities or talents, or on the other hand, we may wonder why He called us to a specific field or area of ministry. Many times, just like the patriarchs, we too seem highly UNQUALIFED for the work at hand.

Here are a few Biblical highlights to ponder:

Gideon’s response BEFORE he defeated the Midianites…

So he said to Him, ‘O my Lord, how can I save Israel? Indeed my clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father’s house.’”—Judges 6.15

Abram’s response that his descendants would be as numerous as the stars…

“But Abram said, ‘Lord God, what will You give me, seeing I go childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?’ Then Abram said, ‘Look, You have given me no offspring; indeed one born in my house is my heir!’”—Genesis 15. 2-3

Moses’ response to bringing the Hebrew children out of slavery…

But Moses said to God, ‘Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh, and that I should bring the children of Israel out of Egypt?’”—Exodus 3.11

These heroes of the faith were not unlike us. They had fears and insecurities just like we do. All of them made major mistakes throughout their journey—many that were far worse than anything we have ever done. Still, God used them in a mighty way. And yet, we wonder… “How can God use me?”

Let us take a look at each one of God’s responses to the questions posed above:

In response to Gideon…

And the Lord said to him, ‘Surely I will be with you, and you shall defeat the Midianites as one man.’”—Judges 6.16

In response to Abram…

“Then He said to him, ‘I am the Lord, who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans, to give you this land to inherit it.’”—Genesis 15.7

In response to Moses…

So He said, ‘I will certainly be with you. And this shall be a sign to you that I have sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall serve God on this mountain.’”—Exodus 3.12

Oftentimes we forget that each great man or woman of God in the Bible, or maybe someone you know even today, came from humble beginnings, just like the rest of us. We can be mesmerized by where they have come from, and worship their current state without remembering that it was God who brought them through a time of character building in order that they might walk out their destiny. How soon we forget that God works miracles just through small and humble acts of obedience.

He used a shepherd boy to kill a giant, a fisherman to establish His Church, an orphaned Jewess to defeat Haman….  superhero

If you are struggling with self-doubt for this up-coming season, we want to encourage you! Although we are each human, and there are times that we too will make mistakes, our confidence is not in our own abilities, but in the Lord God Almighty!

“O Lord God of hosts, who is mighty like You, O Lord? Your faithfulness also surrounds You.”—Psalm 89.8

“Some trust in chariots, and some in horses; But we will remember the name of the Lord our God.”—Psalm 20:7

And He said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.”—2 Corinthians 12.9
