Reclaiming My Role in My Family | Biblical Fatherhood

Biblical fatherhood—what does it mean? It is more than a title. When we pause for a moment and embrace the biblical role that the Lord gave us as fathers, we come under the protective covering of our Heavenly Father. 

Like all aspects of our spiritual heritage, biblical fatherhood manifests when we allow the Holy Spirit to transform our role from within. He shifts our minds, wills, and emotions to align with our spiritual DNA. 

Through our spiritual DNA, no longer do the patterns of generational curses flow through our veins, but instead, new blood. The blood that saves and restores is now imparted to us through Jesus Christ. The bloodline bondage that is passed down is stopped when we empty ourselves and allow the Spirit to fill us with new wine. 

Seven Effects the Blood Has Allowed for the Reclaiming of Biblical Fatherhood

1. Paid Your Debt and Testifies for You in Heaven

• “So Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many. To those who eagerly wait for Him He will appear a second time, apart from sin, for salvation.” —Hebrews 9:28
• “This is He who came by water and blood—Jesus Christ; not only by water, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit who bears witness, because the Spirit is truth.” —1 John 5:6

2. Healed and Sanctified You

• “Who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness—by whose stripes you were healed.” —1 Peter 2:24
• “Therefore Jesus also, that He might sanctify the people with His own blood, suffered outside the gate.” —Hebrews 13:12

3. Made You Spiritually Alive and Speaks on Your Behalf

• “Then Jesus said to them, ‘Most assuredly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you.’” —John 6:53
• “To Jesus the Mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling that speaks better things than that of Abel.” —Hebrews 12:24

4. Cleansed You

• “…washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.” —Revelation 7:14
• “But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.” —1 John 1:7

5. Redeemed and Reconciled You to the Father, Giving You Peace

• “But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement for our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed.” —Isaiah 53:5
• “And they sang a new song, saying: ‘You are worthy to take the scroll, and to open its seals; for you were slain, and have redeemed us to God by Your blood out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation.” —Revelation 5:9

6. Gave You the Boldness to Enter into God’s Presence, and Power to Overcome the Enemy

• “…having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus.” —Hebrews 10:19
• “And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death.” —Revelation 12:11

7. Gave You the Right to Become a Partaker of the Covenant Promise

• “That at that time you were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.” —Ephesians 2:12-13
• “…He gave it to them, and they all drank from it. And He said to them, ‘This is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many.’” —Mark 14:23-24

The blood of Jesus did not just expunge your sin—it also imparted power upon you as you embrace your role as a father in your family. A father should provide, correct, guide, love, and lead his family. Without the Holy Spirit activating the blood in your life, these godly characteristics cannot be manifested. 

When We Adopt a Counterfeit Mindset

There is an identity crisis among fathers in our nation. Many grew up in homes where fathers loved, cared for, and corrected their children through the most formative years of their lives. 

However, others were raised in a household where the love of the Father was simply covered up by a counterfeit. The children were not able to identify the love of their Heavenly Father because their earthly father was not in alignment with Him. 

God has given us the power and responsibility to renounce the lies we have been told and believed, and realign our souls to reflect who we are in Jesus, sons and co-heirs with Him. 

Your Identity as a Son

While each of us has our own unique identity and purpose in Messiah Jesus, as a father, leader, husband, and man, it is crucial that we understand what it means to be called “sons of God.” 

In Jewish culture, the firstborn male had a special status with respect to inheritance. 

Deuteronomy 21:15-17 further explains the firstborn son as the principal heir to the inheritance.

• “If a man has two wives, one loved and the other unloved, and they have borne him children, both the loved and the unloved, and if the firstborn son is of her who is unloved, then it shall be, on the day he bequeaths his possessions to his sons, that he must not bestow firstborn status on the son of the loved wife in preference to the son of the unloved, the true firstborn. But he shall acknowledge the son of the unloved wife as the firstborn by giving him a double portion of all that he has, for he is the beginning of his strength; the right of the firstborn is his.”

When you become a son and co-heir with Jesus, your inheritance is respected by the Lord. You are no longer apart from Him, but together with Him. 

This new perspective changes how you see yourself and live your life. You start to recognize the lies you have believed, and the Lord begins to reveal what true, Godly love looks like. He manifests it within you so that you can leave a legacy with your children, grandchildren, and spiritual children. 

Your Good Father Gives Good Gifts

Remember that your Heavenly Father gives only good things to those who ask Him. It may be hard to understand the love of your Heavenly Father when all you know is the relationship with your earthly father. However, understand that whatever characteristics your earthly father possesses, your Heavenly Father does not change. He is, and always will be, good to those who seek Him. 

• “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. Or what man is there among you who, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him! Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.”—Matthew 7:7-12 (emphasis added)
