Are You Struggling with Your Finances?
God’s Financial Plans Break the Spirit of Poverty
Biblical finance is a concept we must seek to understand in order to break free from a spirit of poverty. In short, God’s plans for financial freedom are very different than that of the world’s. In our human nature, whether we are struggling financially or not, we want to…
- Hold on
- Take more
- Give less
But God calls us to do the opposite. We are to let go (Luke 17:33), leave an inheritance (Proverbs 13:22), and live generously (Leviticus 25:35-37).
The Bible talks about the concept of sowing and reaping. Why? Because this is a picture of how God instructs His people to steward their resources. When we steward our time, tasks, activities, and finances according to God’s will, the heavy burden of poverty is lifted.
Understand that if the poverty spirit has had a hold on your family for years, it will require consistent prayer, wise financial discernment, and time to overcome. However, you can get started by going back to the basic concepts that God laid out in the Bible.
The Principle of Sowing and Reaping
- Jesus told the parable of the sower as a way for us to understand how good soil produces an abundant harvest (Matthew 13:1-9, 18-23).
- The Apostle Paul wrote to the Galatians explaining that we reap what we sow (Galatians 6:7-8).
- In the book of Malachi, the prophet rebukes the people of God, telling them that they are not to rob the Lord. Instead, they were to trust Him and test Him in this, “Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be food in My house, and try Me now in this… If I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you such blessings, that there will not be room enough to receive it” (Malachi 3:10 emphasis added).
These 3 examples give a glimpse into God’s financial principles. From these references, you can see that God cares where your money is sown (into good soil). He allows you to reap what you sow (what is sown will multiply according to its kind). And lastly, God blesses you when you trust Him fully with your finances and obey His Word.Overcoming financial struggles is not easy. There is a point that many people miss as it relates to sowing and reaping. There are seasons of sowing and seasons of harvest. Most of the time, these two seasons are not minutes, days, or hours apart. A harvest takes time.
After you choose to sow a seed into good soil, there is a season of growth. Therefore, when you sow financially, give your seed time to take root, break through the soil, and produce fruit. We understand the hardship that financial burdens have on you and your family. We want to provide you with a few steps, resources, and verses that can encourage you during this time.
Step 1: Start by praying. Ask the Lord where He would have you direct your seed. Ask Him to reveal to you what good soil He wants you to sow into, then follow His prompting. During your prayer time, seek the Spirit’s voice and guidance as to how to shift your finances, so they begin to align with God’s way of giving and living rather than the world’s.As He guides you through the process and you are faithful with little, He will give you more.
“His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.’”—Matthew 25:21
Step 2: Check out the resources below. We know financial hardships can consume your mind, will, and emotions. We want to point you to godly knowledge, discernment, and understanding as you begin to shift your thinking from earthly wisdom to Kingdom wisdom. That’s why we’ve developed resources for you to use during your personal time. Use them as a springboard into your study and ask the Holy Spirit to guide you while you read them so that you can receive a financial breakthrough.“But if you have bitter envy and self-seeking in your hearts, do not boast and lie against the truth… But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy.”—James 3:14, 17
Step 3: Meditate on and declare God’s Word. When you begin declaring God’s Word over your situation, there will be a shift in the spiritual realm. Keep standing in those promises. When you are experiencing financial hardships, the spirit of poverty is usually behind them. Remember Jesus’ words of life in John 10:10 and declare them daily.
