YOUR Words Matter

Have you ever wondered what we as Believers are meant to speak? Do you desire to know what benefits there are to speak like Jesus did? Then join us below as we discover the power of speech, and how the words you speak can bring blessing or cursing to you and those around you!

YOUR Words Matter

Most of us realize to a certain extent that words matter, yet few of us truly understand their power. We say we hate something when we merely dislike it. We call something ugly when it simply is not quite to our liking. We say how some sickness or disease runs in our family, as if God cannot remove it… choosing to speak death instead of life.

These words may appear to be of little importance when spoken. A joking tone may make the sting of many words feel lighter, or perhaps we say something so often—or those around us do—that we hardly take notice. Yet, the Word of God says that we will be held accountable for every idle word. Jesus Himself said this, so why do we not realize the kind of words we speak. Why do we not take notice of the things we say and seek God’s help to retrain our minds, hearts, and of course, our words?

“…out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good things, and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things. But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”—Matthew 12:34-37

Words matter, and as children of the Most High God, we ought to be intentional with what we speak. We ought to speak more of the things of God; more of His very Word.

“Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.”—Proverbs 18:21

Even as we begin to understand that words have power, it can still be hard for us to realize that OUR words hold power. We may be mere flesh and blood beings, who, without God, are nothing, but through God we have been given the power of speech. We have been granted the honor of speaking like Him, and as a result, even a toddler just learning to speak, can change their atmosphere.

YOU can change your atmosphere for the better by speaking life!

Speak Forth Life

Philippians 4:8 says, “Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.”

Yes, we are to think upon these things, but we are also to speak forth these things. All the things in line with God and His ways—His Word!

We were made in the image of God, and God is the God of the living, not the dead (see Matthew 22:32, Mark 12:27, and Luke 20:38). Therefore, are we not meant to choose life, and to speak those words which bring forth life?

The Word says these things about what we speak:

  • “Pleasant words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the bones.”—Proverbs 16:24
  • “For ‘He who would love life and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips from speaking deceit.’”—1 Peter 3:10
  • “Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers.”—Ephesians 4:29
  • “In the multitude of words sin is not lacking, but he who restrains his lips is wise.”—Proverbs 10:19
  • “A wholesome tongue is a tree of life, but perverseness in it breaks the spirit.”—Proverbs 15:4
  • “The heart of the righteous studies how to answer, but the mouth of the wicked pours forth evil.”—Proverbs 15:28
  • “Not what goes into the mouth defiles a man; but what comes out of the mouth, this defiles a man.”—Matthew 15:11
  • “Whoever guards his mouth and tongue keeps his soul from troubles.”—Proverbs 21:23
  • And Many More!

Essentially, the Word says that it is wisdom for us to watch our words and that through watching our words, we can defuse anger, bring life and healing, and even guard our souls! Further, by speaking God’s Word into the atmosphere, we can—in God’s perfect timing—bring His Word to pass in our lives. We can stand upon His Word regarding our children, our families, our healing, our salvation, our relationship with Him, and more. We can speak the life of God into the atmosphere that changes things to match God’s will!

Guard Your Mouth

“Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth; keep watch over the door of my lips.”—Psalm 141:3

Now, we can do much to guard our mouths and change the way we speak through practice and watchfulness. However, if we try to do this without seeking God’s help, changing the way we speak can take much longer and be more challenging than it need be. Because with God, all things are possible, and we do not need to rely only upon our own strength! (See Matthew 19:26 and Mark 10:27.)

Jesus taught us the power of prayer, the strength of our words, and might of God’s Word, through His deeds and His own speech. Mark 11:22-24 says, “So Jesus answered and said to them, ‘Have faith in God. For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, “Be removed and be cast into the sea,” and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says. Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them.’”

This Scripture reminds us that when we believe what we speak and pray, there is power in it. Not through anything we have done, but through our Mighty God! Yet, just as those words we speak in accordance with God’s Word go forth and bear good fruit, so those words contrary to Him proceed to bear bad fruit. This is why we need to speak life! This is why we were made to speak as our God speaks; out of love.

Therefore, let us guard our mouths, choosing to watch our words and speak as Jesus did. Speaking that which we hear our Father in Heaven speak, and that which He has spoken in His Word.

“It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.”—John 6:63
