What is happiness?

Happiness is defined as “a state of being.” But isn’t this a broad definition? Sometimes it’s easier to describe the attributes of happiness. Most people identify the following as happiness characteristics:

  • The freedom to fulfill your passion and find your true purpose
  • Financial freedom
  • Peace and joy
  • Confidence

What does the Bible say about happiness?

To understand this question, you need to be fully aware of how your definition of “happy” could be different than God’s. The enemy tempts us to believe things make us happy… money, power, pride, or pleasure.

The words of King Solomon in Ecclesiastes say this:

“I know that nothing is better for them than to rejoice, and to do good in their lives, and also that every man should eat and drink and enjoy the good of all his labor—it is the gift of God.

“I know that whatever God does, it shall be forever. Nothing can be added to it, and nothing taken from it. God does it, that men should fear before Him. That which is has already been, and what is to be has already been; and God requires an account of what is past.”—Ecclesiastes 3:12-15

There is rejoicing and happiness in satisfying work—when we see it as a gift of God’s sovereignty and grace. Happiness—(esher, in Hebrew, which means blessedness)—is only truly experienced when built upon the solid ground of our identity in Christ.

Paul writes about that identity in terms of loss and gain…

“Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ…”—Philippians 3:8

Jesus says, “I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly” (John 10:10).

What He means here is that He is the one from which true fulfillment and purpose originate. When you seek the Kingdom of God first, the Holy Spirit then moves in you to set you on your path of divine destiny—to reveal passion, peace, and purpose.

The Lord uses those times of pain and struggle to demonstrate His love for you and His covenant promises to you when you fully surrender it all to Him. Satan uses these blockers to keep us from LIVING FREE in Christ.

Decree and declare the Lord’s promise of abundant life in the Courts of Heaven!

Jesus says live free, experience more of God and His fullness, and walk in the abundance of your salvation!

Paul tells us to trust and find our strength in the Lord for all things. There is no spirit of lack when you step into the fullness of your salvation.

“Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content: I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things I have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need.  I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”—Philippians 4:11-13

The biggest challenges to biblical happiness…

Know that Satan is after your blessings and aims to put a roadblock between you and the Lord. But God says nothing can separate you from His love. So, you have a choice—believe the Giver of Truth or the Father of Lies.

  • Fear

Receiving God’s fullness can be blocked by a spirit of fear. This spirit can hinder Believers from receiving love from those around us, or from God, out of fear of rejection.

You must not claim your fears—feed your faith and starve your fears. Don’t dwell on your worry—but remember all of God’s benefits.

“Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits.”—Psalm 103:2

When you overcome fear, there is more room for blessings!

  • Unhealthy Relationships

We need to be yoked with those who are like-minded and who are seeking hard after God. If we stay in fellowship with like-minded people, we are more likely to remain free from fear.

“Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness?”—2 Corinthians 6:14

We must fellowship with light… not darkness. Protect your blessings!

  • Doubt and Unbelief

You must overcome the spirit of doubt and unbelief in your life to receive physical and emotional healing.

Often when the symptoms of illness and hurt become more real than God’s promise of restoration, you fall into doubt and unbelief. Though you may not be aware of God’s exact timing in situations, you can rest in His promises.

“‘For I will restore health to you and heal you of your wounds,’ says the Lord…”—Jeremiah 30:17

Be confident by staying in His Word. Far too often people give up on the Word. Then the spirit of doubt and unbelief gains a foothold. But by staying consistent in His Word, the spirit of doubt and unbelief is replaced with the Spirit of God’s truth.

“So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”—Romans 10:17

  • Pride

A spirit of pride also blocks the activation of God’s fullness and blessings.

Those who are prideful are actually fearful… they long to cover up weaknesses because Satan tells them, ‘You aren’t good enough.’

But the Word of Truth says:

“…‘My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore, most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.”—2 Corinthians 12:9

  • A Lack of Biblical Truths

A lack of biblical knowledge and spiritual maturity drives a wedge between you and God’s blessings. The Lord will meet you where you are, but He loves you enough not to leave you there. He wants you to grow in your faith so that you experience more of His fullness.

Seeking the truth with godly discernment is impossible if you lack the knowledge of biblical truth—God’s instruction.

Jesus tells us in John 6:63, “The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.”

  • A Lack of Patience

A lack of patience can create an unhealthy need for man’s approval. The constant need of approval sets you up for anxiety and doubt, essentially stealing the peace that is already yours.

“Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him; do not fret because of him who prospers in his way, because of the man who brings wicked schemes to pass. Cease from anger, and forsake wrath; do not fret—it only causes harm. For evildoers shall be cut off; but those who wait on the Lord, they shall inherit the earth.”—Psalm 37:7-9

God has only good in store for you. He wants you to welcome the freedom that only He can give. Invite the Holy Spirit in and ask Him to reveal to you those places that are hindering your life of freedom.

If you want to find your purpose, remember this…to drive your passion, you must possess patience!

Patience is active—not passive—but you must not manipulate a situation for self-gain. It’s in the patient waiting that mighty Godly characteristics are produced. We overcome through the waiting… and here is why we overcome:

“He who overcomes shall inherit all things, and I will be his God and he shall be My son.”—Revelation 21:7
