How to Light the Menorah
Lighting the Menorah dates back to the time of the First Temple in Jerusalem. The Temple Menorah had 6 branches with 7 candles.
Traditionally, the Menorah candles would be lit by the woman of the house just before sunset on the Sabbath.
She circles her hands over the flames 3 times
Places her hands briefly over her eyes
Recites the Hebrew blessing that honors God and ushers in the Sabbath
The Blessings When Lighting Menorah
“Blessed are You, LORD our God, King of the universe, who has sanctified us with His commandments, and commanded us to kindle the lights of Shabbat.”
The Phonetic Hebrew Transliteration:
“Barukh atah Adonai, Eloheinu, Melekh ha’olam, asher kid’shanu b’mitzvotav v’tzivanu l’hadlik ner shel Shabbat.”
Lighting the Menorah is not about performing traditions in a legalistic way, but about experiencing more of God through these actions. Ask the Lord to prepare your heart for His rest and follow the Spirit’s lead.
