How to Light the Menorah

Lighting the Menorah dates back to the time of the First Temple in Jerusalem. The Temple Menorah had 6 branches with 7 candles.

Traditionally, the Menorah candles would be lit by the woman of the house just before sunset on the Sabbath.

• She circles her hands over the flames 3 times
• Places her hands briefly over her eyes
• Recites the Hebrew blessing that honors God and ushers in the Sabbath

The Blessings When Lighting Menorah

In English:

• “Blessed are You, LORD our God, King of the universe, who has sanctified us with His commandments, and commanded us to kindle the lights of Shabbat.”

The Phonetic Hebrew Transliteration:

• “Barukh atah Adonai, Eloheinu, Melekh ha’olam, asher kid’shanu b’mitzvotav v’tzivanu l’hadlik ner shel Shabbat”.
