Obedience to God’s Word

God’s Word commands us to love the Lord with all of our hearts, souls and minds. This commandment is a picture of obedience to God’s Word.

“Jesus said to him, ‘”You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.'” This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” On these two commandments hang all the Law and Prophets.'” – Matthew 22:37-40

Do We Need to Be Obedient to God’s Word?

Most of us would give a resounding, “Yes!” However, it is challenging to do, and many of us minimize the importance of obeying God’s Word. At the same time, we don’t know the power we have in the Holy Spirit to obey God’s Word. Either way, we miss out on the blessings God has for us.

Let us be clear that salvation is not about the work we do, but the work Yeshua did on the cross.

“For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.” – Ephesians 2:8-9

God asks us to obey Him as a way of worshiping Him and stepping further into His presence. Obedience to God’s Word says…

  • He is our Lord.
  • He is our source of power and strength.
  • We recognize all blessings come from Him.

We cannot expect the Lord to bless what we do not surrender to Him.

What Does Obedience to God’s Word Look Like?

When we put our faith in God, we choose to hear the Word, believe the Word, and be doers of the Word. This is what obedience looks like.

“So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” – Romans 10:17

“But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in the mirror; for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does.” – James 1:22-25

What Does Biblical Obedience Mean?

As mentioned above, obedience is about hearing and doing. Biblically speaking, obedience is first about understanding that you are under the authority of God. When you grasp this truth, you turn your ears to him so that you can receive His direction.

A Greek term for obedience in the Bible communicates the idea of taking a position of submission and trusting in God’s sovereignty.

You obey because you trust and have faith that God’s plans for you are always good.

“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.” – Jeremiah 29:11

Five Bible Verses about Blessings and Obedience to God’s Word

Read the following verse about the blessings associated with obeying God’s Word…

  1. “But He said, ‘More than that, blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it!'” – Luke 11:28 (emphasis added)
  2. “In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.” – Genesis 22:18 (emphasis added)
  3. Now therefore, if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, then you shall be a special treasure to me above all people; for all the earth is Mine.” – Exodus 19:5 (emphasis added)
  4. “But Simon answered and said to Him, ‘Master, we have toiled all night and caught nothing; nevertheless at Your word I will let down the net.’ And when they had done this, they caught a great number of fish, and their net was breaking.” – Luke 5:5-6 (emphasis added)
  5. “This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.” – Joshua 1:8 (emphasis added)

There is a clear relationship between obedience to God’s Word and blessings.

So then, why do we often walk in disobedience?

Why Is Obedience to God’s Word Difficult?

In short, obedience is hard because we live in a fallen and sinful world. We can knowingly or unknowingly believe the lies of the enemy and cast obedience aside for a season. God’s Word warns against this and tells us to always be aware that there is an enemy waiting to devour us (see 1 Peter 5:8).

Sometimes, we can feel like our obedience gets us nowhere. Why is that?

Generational Curses

Perhaps there needs to be a revelation given to expose the deeper roots of our problems. Maybe there are things in our past or our family line that need cleansing.

Generational curses can wreak havoc because we can be unaware that they are running like an undercurrent in the river of our lives. They can go undetected for generations – this is the enemy’s plan.

Deuteronomy 28:1-14 lists blessings that are released when we obey God’s Word.

“Now it shall come to pass, if you diligently obey the voice of the Lord your God, to observe carefully all His commandments which I command you today, that the Lord your Go will set you high above all nations of the earth.” – Deuteronomy 28:1

Deuteronomy 28:15-68 lists curses that come upon us when we disobey God’s Word.

Take a look at verse 38 in this Scripture passage: “You shall carry much seed out to the field but gather little in, for the locust shall consume it.”

Is this how you feel at times? You take an action, yet there is still a robber of your seed.

This could mean that generational curses passed down to you are making it difficult to break free.

You need to stop the bloodline bondage passing down through the family line before it carries on to your future generations.

If it isn’t, it gets uglier, stronger, and worse with every passing generation. It is as if it gains momentum as it flows through the veins…into our children and our children’s children.

God warns us about this…

  • “…’The Lord, the Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth, keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children and the children’s children to the third and fourth generation.'” – Exodus 34:6-7

If we reject God’s love and forgiveness, the effect of sin in the bloodline continues through the generations that continue to reject Him.

The Good News

You can come into agreement with your salvation through Yeshua and the blood that still speaks on your behalf. Yeshua casts those sins as far from you as the east is from the west!
