The Fruit of the Spirit

In Galatians 5:22-23 we find a list of nine attributes that make up the “Fruit of the Spirit” which develop within us as we live according to the Holy Spirit—living in alignment with God’s will and character. These are:

  • Love
  • Joy
  • Peace
  • Longsuffering
  • Kindness
  • Goodness
  • Faithfulness
  • Gentleness
  • Self-control

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.”—Galatians 5:22-23

Yet, what do these mean for our lives, and what does the Word say about them?

The Fruit of the Spirit, Peace

Peace is the third characteristic listed in the Fruit of the Spirit found in Galatians 5:22-23, yet its importance is beyond question. To walk in peace is to be in alignment with God—in tune with the Holy Spirit—and it is needed more and more as we draw closer to the return of our Messiah.

For as the time draws nearer to His return, the world grows more restless, the enemy tries to waylay us with fear, and we NEED God’s perfect peace to rise above; to remain a light in an ever darkening world. We need that spiritual fruit of peace to hear His voice in the storm!

“Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”—John 14:27

The Lord wants us to walk in and know His perfect peace. So, it is no wonder that “peace” is mentioned nearly 400 times in the Word! If it was not important—in the days of old and today—it would not be found from Genesis to Revelation. Jesus would not have spoken to the wind and waves of fear with, “Peace, be still” (Mark 4:39).

“On the same day, when evening had come, He said to them, ‘Let us cross over to the other side.’ Now when they had left the multitude, they took Him along in the boat… And a great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that it was already filling. But He was in the stern, asleep on a pillow. And they awoke Him and said to Him, ‘Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?’

“Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, ‘Peace, be still!’ And the wind ceased and there was a great calm. But He said to them, ‘Why are you so fearful…’”—Mark 4:35-40

Jesus walked in peace. He slept, even during the storm… Because He KNEW His Father, He knew His Father’s voice and His will, and He did not fear the wiles of the enemy. He trusted God, and in turn, He knew peace in every situation.

We are also meant to walk in that same peace. The Holy Spirit inside us leads us to peace when we listen to His voice above all others.

Walk in Peace

Peace is obviously important and something we all desire, but how do we walk in peace? How do we fix our eyes on things above so that the storms of this world appear as they are—small in the view of eternity?

Well, since peace grows in us as part of the Fruit of the Spirit, it behooves us to spend more time with the giver of that fruit, the Holy Spirit. Like anything else, we become better with ‘practice,’ with interaction. A relationship that has only existed for a few days does not have the same look or flavor as one built over decades. The intimacy and familiarity with another—with the Holy Spirit—only grows all the more with time spent together.

“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.”—John 14:26

If we want to walk in peace, we need to begin spending more time with the Holy Spirit. Practice listening to His voice, walk as He leads, seek His heart’s desire each day. Pray for peace—for yourself, for your family, for Jerusalem, for leadership. Read God’s Word, so that you understand what the will of God is—what God’s voice is like.

Basically, there are three major things we can do to walk and grow in ANY of the Spirit’s fruit:

  1. Spend time with the Holy Spirit
  2. Spend time in the Word of God
  3. Pray

Each of these is important, yet simple. A simple pattern of behavior develops that is capable of altering not only our lives, but the lives of everyone we meet. And each of these action steps involve one common denominator—time.

It may be a process, but with each passing day, our peace will grow, the Fruit of the Spirit will grow inside of us.

With practice we begin to make these patterns a daily lifestyle. We begin to see that even as we are walking through a grocery store, picking our kids up from school, or sitting in church, we CAN be spending time with the Holy Spirit, praying to God, or perhaps mulling over Scriptures that Holy Spirit brings to mind. We can make God first in our lives, and in turn, receive more blessings than we ever imagined.

We CAN be like Jesus. So at peace with our Father, that even when the storms of life come, we are resting in Him. Resting in His peace.

“Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; and perseverance, character; and character, hope. Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.”—Romans 5:1-5

“Now when He got into a boat, His disciples followed Him. And suddenly a great tempest arose on the sea, so that the boat was covered with the waves. But He was asleep. Then His disciples came to Him and awoke Him, saying, ‘Lord, save us! We are perishing!’

“But He said to them, ‘Why are you fearful, O you of little faith?’ Then He arose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm. So the men marveled, saying, ‘Who can this be, that even the winds and the sea obey Him?’”—Matthew 8:23-27
