Bless the LORD Oh My Soul

When we are in the depths of a cave, be it depression, anxiety, fear or worry, how can our hearts cry out to the LORD and sing His praises, thanking him for His promises… especially when those very promises seem to be nowhere in sight? Our human minds cannot begin to fathom how God’s blessings and promises of prosperity will pour over us as we are hiding from the fear we are experiencing in our souls.

King David wrote in the Psalms a vast array of emotions, from having joy that brought tears, to having worry that brought fears. As he was running from his enemies, hiding in a literal cave, he could feel the LORD’S presence with him. He writes…

“I will bless the LORD at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth. My soul shall make it’s boasts in the LORD; the humble shall hear of it and be glad. Oh, magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt His name together.”—Psalm 34:1-3

David’s situation at the time seemed bleak. God’s anointed was now hiding out, with every foreseeable right to worry and obsess about his current state. Instead he chose to bless and extol the LORD. He not only wanted to bless Him in his heart, but shout praises from his mouth!

Jesus Himself says, “from out of the over flow of the heart the mouth speaks.”—Luke 6:45

David’s promised position as king seemed to have him in a predicament. Here, the promised and anointed king of Israel was now being hunted down and was hiding in caves. David’s heart after God shows how he could choose to boast in himself, his “rightful” position, or he could choose to boast in the LORD, and what the LORD had done to spare his life and promised him.

What predicament are you in today that you simply cannot, in your own mind, see any way out? Read God’s promises…

“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.”—Jeremiah 29:11

Will you choose to believe the One who created you? Or will you choose the enemy’s lies that want to rob you of your joy and your inheritance? In Christ you hold these promises, you can claim them. Confess with your mouth in prayer today God’s promise for your life. Join a brother or sister in prayer and praise the LORD for the hope He has given you in your future! Bless the LORD with your heart and soul!
